Bonnye "Gean" Gauntt-Chapman

Memorial services for Bonnye Gean Gauntt Chapman, age 70, of Mount Pleasant TX, will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant. Visitation will be held at 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. prior to the service. Bonnye Gean passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

Bonnye Gean Gauntt Chapman was born on January 12, 1953, in Mount Pleasant, Texas, as the daughter of Ardelia and Andy Gauntt of Mount Pleasant. Gean graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and married Jackie Powell. Gean and Jackie’s first child, Billy Joe Powell, was born in 1971. They moved to Arizona and Gean worked at the Levi Jeans plant there. Gean’s second child, Tammy Dawn Jones was born in 1978, in Mt. Pleasant. A third child, Patricia Ann Jones was born in 1980. Gean made her home in Mt. Pleasant. Gean was a member of the first graduating class of the new Nursing Program at NTCC. She worked as a nurse at Titus Regional Hospital until her retirement in 2017, due to medical reasons.

Gean Chapman was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant, Texas. She was involved in Women’s Bible Study there. She loved being with her friends at church and from her Sunday School Class. Gean also loved sewing. She created Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, sock monkeys, quilts, scrubs for fellow nurses, and clothes for family members. She also loved cooking and canning. Traveling was an exciting pastime for Gean with family and friends.

Gean was a strong, single-mom after divorce. “Strong in her faith, strong to provide for her children, and strong to help others” is the cherished memory of her daughters. Even when money was tight, her children never wanted for anything, and did not know they were poor, because Gean used her talents to provide for her loved ones.

Gean is survived by her daughters Tammy Jones and Patricia Jones, both of Mt. Pleasant; Daughter-in-Law Rhonda Powell of Mt. Pleasant; Niece Andrea Gauntt of Raleigh, North Carolina; Shelly Keith of Arkansas; Nephew Peter “Pete” Gauntt of Knoxville, Tennessee; Grandchildren – Jonathan Powell, Brittany Powell, Kerrie Wright, Lori Jo Ragsdale, Samantha Newman, Jacky Newman, and Jeffery Newman. Also surviving Gean are her great-grandchildren – Emma Ruiz, Eli Ruiz, Alexander Powell, Jayden Craig, Karter Craig, Adalyn Ragsdale, Landon Perdue Grayson Perdue, Lane Newman, Madisyn Newman, Weston Newman, and Paisley Newman.

Gean is preceded in death by her only son Billy Joe Powell; Billy Joe’s sons – her grandsons Christopher Powell and Richard Powell; parents Andy and Ardelia Gauntt; brothers Mike Gauntt, Don Gauntt, and Bill Gauntt.
